THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the 2011 celebration! You were amazing!

Tucson is celebrating National TAP Dance Day (NTDD)

This year's tap weekend is packed with activities for dancers, observers, and students ages 10 & up, beginners to advanced. The brochure (download above) contains details on every aspect of the weekend and the link to the bios pages has descriptions of our faculty and performers. Here are the highlights:

  • Ten master tap dance classes
  • a new Youth TAP Intensive
  • Sounds of the Soles of the Southwest performance
  • a lecture/demo on the history of tap
  • an informal presentation by master class participants and Youth TAP Intensive students
  • and a TAP JAM

  • These activities are being prepared for this year's 3rd celebration of this very special Tap Day that has been around since November 7, 1989!
NOTE: May 25th is the official NTDD date and is the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson - the legendary tap dancer that often appeared with Shirley Temple and became famous for his stair tap dance.

Our special guest this year is Nian Cadman-Dake from Phoenix. Nian is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, where she had a successful studio for 20 years. She started dancing at seven and had her own dance studio in her parent's basement before graduating high school. Her students won many titles and had great performance opportunities. One of them was performing in 14 U.S.O. shows for which Nian received a citation from Bob Hope. Nian's teachers were Jack Stanley, Ernest Carlos, Jack Pottiger, Ronn Daniels, Stan Mazin, Bob Audy, Luigi, Jo Jo Smith and Danny Daniels, to name just a few. You can read more about Nian in the bios page. She will be teaching two classes on Saturday morning. Everyone (even non-dancers) is welcome to observe the master classes for a nominal fee. Read details in the brochure above.

Other faculty include Greg Varlotta, a Phoenix multi-instrumentalist jazz musician who has created a music notation system for tap dance called FootNotes. Tucson's tap master Frank Trent, returns to teach us about the styles of tap and talk about Vaudeville in our lecture/demo on the history of tap on Sunday at 4:30. Suzy Guarino and Jenefer Miller of Tap 24.7 (Phoenix) return bringing more contemporary tap work. Jenefer will be teaching intermediate level choreography. Chrissy Jones is a Chicagoan now at the UofA and the former director of (Talent Forum's) Footprints Tap Ensembles I & II. Her focus will be on improvisation preparing our dancers for the TAP JAM that culminates our weekend celebration. Suzy, Jenefer & Chrissy will head up the new Youth TAP Intensive for highly skilled tap dancers ages 10-12. Tucson's Megan Maltos (Danswest) will teach the Nicholas Brothers' Lucky Numbers as one of our missions is to recreate American Masterpieces. Last year Megan and her dancers performed Moses from Singing In The Rain. Beginners will have an opportunity to have an energetic tap warm-up each morning and learn Honi Coles' Stroll with NTDD producer KP Black. As Honi said, "If you can walk, you can tap dance." There will be a free showing of Gotta Dance! Women in Tap on Saturday at 12:30 pm. Come see the women responsible for keeping tap thriving coast to coast. They are remarkable.

We thank our sponsors this year: Arizona Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Arizona Dance Coalition, Ackerly Adversing and DancInc. Your support is significant to us and to the dance community in Arizona that values and wants to preserve and celebrate a dance art form "made in the U.S.A. ~ TAP!"

If you would like to be a sponsor or contribute to the raffle/auction, please contact Krystyna at 520/743-1349. We would be happy to add you to the list of sponsors on the left.
